Cookie Act

Through this Cookie Policy, the International Centre for Ageing Research, a Foundation of the Valencian Autonomous Community, hereinafter ICAR, provides information on how cookies are used on this website, their purpose and characteristics, as well as the procedures for accepting, rejecting, configuring or deleting them.

The use of the term “terminal equipment” throughout this text will refer to any device from which the USER accesses the Website, such as a computer, mobile phone, tablet, etc. ICAR recommends that you read this Cookie Policy carefully.

1. What are cookies?

Cookies are files that are downloaded onto the USER’s terminal equipment and allow information to be stored and retrieved when the USER browses. In general, these technologies can be used for many different purposes, such as to recognise you as a USER, obtain information about your browsing habits, or customise the way in which the Contents are displayed.

The specific ways in which ICAR uses these technologies are described in Section 3.

2. Types of cookies

Cookies can be classified according to the following criteria:

2.1. Classification of cookies according to the entity that manages them.

First-party cookies: these are cookies that are sent to the USER’s terminal equipment from a computer or domain managed by ICAR and from which the service requested by the USER is provided.

Third-party cookies: these are cookies that are sent to the USER’s terminal equipment from a computer or domain that is not managed by ICAR, but by another entity, which processes the data obtained from the cookies.

2.2. Classification of cookies according to the length of time they remain activated on the USER’s terminal equipment.

Session cookies: these are cookies that collect and store data while the USER accesses the Website. They usually serve to store information that only needs to be kept for the provision of the service requested by the USER on a single occasion (e.g. list of products purchased) and disappear at the end of the session.

Persistent cookies: these are cookies that store information for a period of time set by the party responsible for the cookie and which can be accessed and processed during this period. This period varies depending on the cookie, and can be anywhere from a few minutes to several years.

2.3. Classification of cookies according to their purpose (the most frequent ones are described)

  • Technical cookies: they enable the USER to browse the Website and use the various options or services it contains. They are necessary in order to provide the service or content requested by the USER and are responsible for technical aspects, such as identifying a session, accessing parts of restricted access, applying for registration or participation in an event, completing the purchase process for an order, enabling dynamic content, sharing content over social networks, etc.
  • Customisation cookies: they enable information to be remembered so that the USER can access the Website with certain characteristics that can make the experience different for each user, such as the language, appearance or content of the Website depending on the type of browser used by the USER, etc.
  • Analysis or measurement cookies: they are used to create browsing profiles and to learn USERS’ preferences in order to improve the range of products and services offered, and to improve the Website.
  • Advertising cookies: they make it possible to manage, as efficiently as possible, the advertising spaces which, where applicable, have been included on the Website from which the requested service is provided, based on criteria such as the edited content or the frequency at which the advertisements are shown.
  • Behavioural advertising cookies: they store information on the behaviour of USERS obtained by ongoing observation of the USERS’ browsing habits, making it possible to develop a specific profile in order to show them advertising based on such habits.
