ICAR Scientific Advisory Committee

As a scientific support and advisory body, ICAR has an External Scientific Advisory Committee, made up of scientists of special international relevance in the field of research related to ageing.

Composition of the ICAR Scientific Advisory Committee:

MARIA A. BLASCO

doctor maria blasco

Committee President

Spanish molecular biologist and scientist specializing in the study of telomeres and telomerase. Director of the National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) since June 2011, having received multiple awards and recognitions.

He has researched at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY, EECC, CSIC and CNIO.

ÁNGELA NIETO

Angela Nieto

PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, who develops her work at the Alicante Institute of Neurosciences. His main contribution has been the impact that the reactivation of embryonic programs has on adult pathologies, including tumor progression, fibrosis, and bone growth and mineralization.

Member of the High Consultative Council of the Generalitat Valenciana; the Scientific Committee of the Institut Curie, Paris; the National Center for Oncological Research (CNIO), Madrid; from the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG), Barcelona, among others.

LINDA PARTRIDGE

Linda Partridge

British scientist who studies the biology and genetics of aging and related diseases.

Weldon Professor of Biometrics at the Institute for Healthy Aging, University College, London, and Founding Director of the Max Planck Institute for the Biology of Aging, Cologne, Germany.

PURA MUÑOZ

Pura Muñoz

PhD in Pharmacology, outstanding in the study of cellular aging, currently developing her work at the Carlos III National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CSIC), Madrid.

Expert in cellular aging from the processes of regeneration and
growth of muscle tissue. His research focuses on the possibility of regenerating human muscle tissue.

THOMAS RANDO

Thomas Rando

Stem cell biologist and neurologist and professor at Stanford University, where he is founding director of the Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging.

Co-Founder and Deputy Director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, Founding Director of the Stanford Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic.

THOMAS KIRKWOOD

Thomas Kirkwood

English biologist who made his contribution to the biology
of aging by proposing the disposable soma theory of aging.

Currently a Research Fellow and Associate Dean for Aging at the University of Newcastle.

MANUEL SERRANO

Manuel Serrano

Spanish biochemist and biologist at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Institute,
where he directs the “Cellular plasticy and desease” group.

Internationally recognized in the field of tumor suppression, senescence and aging. Pioneer, along with his team, in the generation of genetically modified mice resistant to damage and cancer.

IZPIZUA-BELMONTE

Izpizua Belmonte

Spanish biochemist and pharmacist, specialized in the field of developmental biology. He is the Roger Guillermin Professor at the Gene Expression Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California.

He investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for embryonic development from the moment of fertilization until the formation of an adult organism made up of millions of cells.

ANA MARIA CUERVO

Ana Maria Cuervo

Cell biologist. She holds the Rober and Renee Belfer Chair in the study of neurodegenerative diseases at Yeshiva University in New York, and is Associate Professor of Molecular Developmental Biology and Medicine and Co-Director of the Center for Studies on Aging.

Considered an expert in the field of autophagy (the process by which cells recycle their waste) and in the molecular biology of aging.
